Limitations of new driver: • This driver does not support “Fast User Switching” in OS 10.3. This feature must be turned off before using Epson Scan.
• You may receive an error “Epson Scan cannot be started” when trying to scan from a Perfection 2450 that is connected to a USB 2.0 supported port. To avoid this error, use a Firewire connection or a USB 1.1 only supported port.
• Not all the scanner models on this list support Color Restoration and Dust Removal so these settings may be unavailable in Epson Scan.
• If experiencing unstable operation when scanning from a Perfection 1250 or 1260 scanner, restart your system.
• If the computer goes into “sleep mode” and this setting was enabled in the Apple
Menu and you try to switch to a different mode after doing a preview scan in
Photoshop, the Epson Scan driver will freeze. This does not happen if the computer goes into “sleep mode” after screen saver has started. To avoid lock-ups, change the scanning mode before the computer goes into “sleep mode” or re-launch Epson
Scan after the computer wakes up and then change modes.
• After scanning with the Perfection 1250, if you then close Epson Scan and disconnect the USB cable, a scanner model selection dialog box may appear on the screen. Click “No” and the box closes. You can scan normally afterwards.
Action: The new driver is available on the Epson web site. Go to www.epson.com and click on Drivers
& Downloads. Select your scanner model. On the Downloads page look for TWAIN Driver and
Epson Scan Utility v.1.28A in the Macintosh section.
To Install Epson Scan 1.28A: 1. Launch the EPSON Scan Installer and follow the on screen instructions.

Reason:After completing a scan with the Epson TWAIN driver, Image Capture may suddenly crash. Theproblem appears to be isolated to Image Capture and does NOT occur in Adobe Photoshop 7,
Photoshop Elements 2.0 or other TWAIN-compliant applications.
Note: “Image Capture” and “Preview” are stand-alone application utilities built into OS X.
Steps to Reproduce:1. Launch Image Capture. Open Preferences, Under 'Scanner Preferences' check the box for
'Use TWAIN software whenever possible'.
2. Quit Image Capture to save the setting.
3. Re-launch Image Capture.
4. Click Scan.
5. Click Cancel in the Epson TWAIN Full-Auto mode window.
6. Click “Manual Mode” to change to the Epson TWAIN Manual mode user interface window.
7. Without making a selection in the preview window, click the “Scan” button in the TWAINwindow, and wait for the scan to complete.
Note: After acquiring an image, Image Capture automatically opens the “Preview” application toview the image.
8. Notice that Image Capture crashes after sending the resulting scanned image to the
“Preview” application.
Solution and Workarounds:Choose from any of the solutions listed below.
1. In the Preferences settings for Image Capture, do NOT check the box for 'Use TWAINsoftware whenever possible'.

Reason: Currently, there are many add-in USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394 connection host adapter products on the market that include drivers for Windows and Macintosh OS that did not originally support specific interfaces. Epson has released several scanner products with built-in USB 2.0 and/or IEEE-1394
(FireWire) ports. This document provides a guideline on EPSON America’s support policy on the various operating systems and the interface connections they support. EPSON technical support representatives will only be able to support customers who have Epson products that are configured in accordance with the operating system requirements outlined here and in the product’s documentation. Epson customers experiencing problems on an Epson product connected to an add-in USB 2.0 or IEEE-1394 interface that does not meet the minimum system requirements will be asked to contact the interface product vendor or computer manufacturer for technical support.
This document is not model specific. It does not include other important system requirements required to determine product compatibility on a user’s computer. Subject: Smart Panel Copy Utility may produce copies with a light gray/blue/pink background when printing to non-EPSON printers.
Description of issue: If you are using Copy from EPSON Smart Panel 2.5/2.6 or you installed the Copy utility 2.00A patch for Smart Panel 2.0A/1.0.xA, you may find that the program produces copies with a light gray/blue/pink background.
Reason: This is because when printing to non-EPSON printers with the Copy utility, the Automatic
Document Enhancement feature is turned off by default.
Solution: To remove the background, you must enable Automatic Document Enhancement. To turn on this feature, launch the Copy applet by double-clicking on its icon. Select Epson TWAIN 5 at the following window and click “OK”.

Click on the “Image Adjust” button. You will notice the Auto Document Enhancement OFF button is selected (highlighted in dark gray).
Click the ON button. You will now notice that this button is selected (highlighted in dark gray).
Now click on the large green Copy button, your image will be scanned and printed. The copy of your document should look very close to the original with no background colors added.
Note: The Copy utility was designed to scan and print a copy of a Letter size (8.5” X 11”) document. If your document is not a full letter-size piece of paper, then the portion of the scanner’s document mat that is showing will be included as part of your copy. Some bright white papers can cause a noticeable contrast between the document and the document mat.
As a result the Copy utility may recognize the exposed document mat as a having a light blue color. In this case you may still see a light blue background on your printout where the document mat was showing. Page 1 of 1

This bulletin was created to inform you of an issue with Epson Smart Panel running under
Windows 2000. This issue affects Smart Panel version 1.0.xA (1.01, 1.02, 1.03), bundled withthe Perfection 640U/1240U/1640SU series and version 2.0A, which is included with the
Perfection 1250/1650/2450 series.
Description of the Issue:When running Windows 2000, if Epson Smart Panel is installed from the scanner software
CD, and is used by members of the Administrator or Power Users Group, the program worksnormally. If a member of a restricted group (Users, Backup Operators, Replicator, Guest) logson to a computer on which an Administrator or Power User installed Smart Panel, the user willreceive an error when booting up to the desktop. A dialog box with an “OK” button pops updisplaying the following error message:“There is no Registry data for EPSON SMART PANEL!'
Clicking 'OK' in the dialog box does not remove the error message, even if you click OKrepeatedly. The computer is unusable at this point and eventually locks up. To recover, theuser must perform a hard reset and log in as a Power user or Administrator.
If a member of the “Restricted User” group attempts to install the Epson Smart Panel software,one of two things happens: (1) Windows prevents the user from starting installation or (2) theinstallation completes and all users, including Administrators and Power Users will see the
'Registry Data Error' when booting to the desktop.
Reason:Smart Panel loads “Start” button monitoring during Windows startup. When logged in as arestricted user, Windows returns an error message as described above because the user hasinsufficient rights. Specifications for Smart Panel do not provide sufficient rights for restrictedusers to install and use Smart Panel on Windows 2000. Only Administrators, users with
Administrator rights and Power users have sufficient access privileges to install and use Smart
Panel. If a member of a Restricted user group is able to install Epson Smart Panel, theprogram will need to be manually removed by an Administrator logged on in “Safe Mode.”
Using the “Search” utility in Windows 2000, delete all files for “Epson Smart Panel for
Scanners.” A System Administrator will then need to add the 'Restricted user” to the Power
Users Group before the user can install and use Smart Panel.1

Subject: Copy Utility Workaround for Non-Epson Printers
This bulletin was created to provide information on using Smart Panel’s Copy Utility with non-Epsonprinters in Windows. The following sections describe a workaround that can be used when Copy Utilityhas problems working with non-Epson printers.
Description of Issue:Epson Smart Panel includes a utility called Copy that is used for scanning and printing documents.
Although Copy works with non-Epson printers it does not support all models. Epson periodically releasesupdates to support the newer models. However, since new printers are continually being released tomarket, the current Copy update may not work with the latest models.
When Copy Utility launches, it first initializes the scanner and printer. If it does not recognize the printer,the program will normally return an error. The error message may vary depending on the operatingsystem and version of Copy. In some cases, the program won’t generate an error dialog; instead, it willlaunch and then quickly shut down. If you get the error dialog, it will typically look like one of those listedbelow. When you click OK to close the dialog, the program takes you back to the Smart Panel main userinterface.2
Workaround:As a temporary solution, select another Windows default printer (i.e. one that’s compatible with Copy)and then launch Copy. In Copy, change the printer back to the one that you want to use. Click the greenand Copy button to scan and print.
Follow these steps to configure Copy for the workaround.
1) First, verify that you have installed the latest version of Copy (currently 2.00A). Launch Copy andlook for a green screen. This is version 2.00A and it should look like this:If you don’t see this on your screen then visit our web site at www.epson.com and download the Copyupdate.
2) Once you have installed the update, test your printer in Copy. If you get an error then go to thenext step.
3) Click the Start button and then click Settings. Select Printers. You can also use Control Panel toselect Printers (Printers and Faxes for Windows XP). In Printers, use the Add Printer Wizard toadd a printer. For Windows 98 and up, you can try the HP LaserJet 4. For Windows 2000 and
XP, the Stylus Photo 750 ESC/P2 works fine. For Windows 95, you’ll need to use an older modelsuch as the HP LaserJet 3 series. Keep in mind that other models can be used. If one modeldoesn’t work then use another one.
4) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer. Once completed verify that it is the defaultprinter.
5) Launch Copy. If the new default printer is compatible, the program will open normally.3
6) Click the Device Settings button. This will bring up the Device Settings user interface. In the
Output Device field (the default printer will be listed here), click on the arrow. This will bring upthe Output Device Chooser window. The screen should look like this.
7) Change the printer name to the one you want to use and then click OK. Click on the Greenbutton to start scanning.1

1. Close Smart Panel if you have it running.
2. From the Start button click Run and then Browse.
3. Search for the folder that contains the downloaded Photo Print Utility file (By default this folder is called EPSON, unless youspecified a different download folder location).
4. Double-click this file to extract the Setup files.
5. Double-click SETUP.EXE. The installation will start and the Welcome screen will launch. Click Next.
6. Next you will see the following screen, click Browse.2
Note: You must install the update files in the same directory as the original version of Photo Print in order for the update to workcorrectly. If your installation of EPSON Smart Panel was performed using the default directory you need to install the files to thefollowing location on your Hard Drive C:Program FilesEpsonEPSON Smart Panel for ScannersPhoto Print Utility. If you didnot install the program using the default location you will need to install the Update files to the directory in which you installed
EPSON Smart Panel's Photo Print Utility.
7. Browse to the following location: 'C:program filesepsonepson smart panel for scannersphoto print utility” and click OK
8. If you are pointing to the correct folder, you will see the following screen. Click Next. If you do not see the screen below, goback to step 6.3
Note: the full path to the destination folder may not be showing.
9. You will see a Setup Complete window, click Finish to complete the install.
10. To verify you have properly installed the update open Epson Smart Panel and click on the Photo Print Button. You will see aprogress window that says 'Setting up printer.' Before you print, have your media type, print size, and Printer Driver set tothe correct settings. Put a photo on the document glass and Click the 'Print' button. The 'Select TWAIN source' window willpop up, select 'EPSON TWAIN 5' and click OK. Your photo will be scanned and printed.
Note: You can launch EPSON Photo Print as a standalone application, without needing to launch Epson Smart Panel. The Photo Print
Utility update program will automatically put an Entry in the Start menu. To find this entry click on; Start>Programs>EPSON
Scanner>EPSON Photo Print. The update program will also put an “EPSON Photo Print” shortcut icon on your Desktop, you canlaunch the Photo Print Utility from the shortcut. If you do not want this icon on the desktop, simply drag it to the Recycle Bin orhighlight the shortcut icon and hit the delete key on your keyboard.1

Copy Utility has problems working with non-Epson printers.
Description of Issue:Epson Smart Panel includes a utility called Copy that is used for scanning and printing documents.
Although Copy works with non-Epson printers, it does not support all models. Epson periodicallyreleases updates to support the newer models. However, since new printers are continually beingreleased to market, the current Copy utility may not work with the latest models.
When Copy Utility launches it first initializes the scanner and then the printer. If it does not recognize theprinter, the program may lock up the system or simply stop running. You may have to use the Force Quitcommand or restart the computer to recover.
Workaround:As a temporary solution, select the LaserWriter as the default printer and then launch Copy. In Copy,select the printer that you want to use. Click the Copy button to auto-scan and print. You can use thisworkaround with Smart Panel 1.01A, 1.02A, 1.03A and 2.0A.
Follow these steps to configure Copy for the workaround.
1) Open Chooser and select a different default printer. We recommend using the LaserWriter.
Close Chooser when finished.
2) Launch Copy. Click on the Target Printer button. This automatically opens Chooser. Select theactual printer you will use to scan and print. After completing your selection, click OK to close
Chooser.
3) Click Print Setting and configure the printer driver settings as needed. Click OK to close the
Settings dialog box.
4) Click the Copy button to start scanning.
5) When you are finished using Copy and you have no other print jobs, open Target Printer and setthe default printer back to the LaserWriter. Close Copy.Page 1 of 1

This bulletin was created to inform you of an issue with Epson Smart Panel version 1.0.xAsoftware running under Windows 2000. This software can be found on the scanner software
CD for the following Epson scanner series: Perfection 640U/1240U/1640SU.
Description of the Issue:This issue will occur if you have one of the following products: the Epson Perfection
640U/1240U/1640SU series scanner, and are using Windows 2000.
When running Windows 2000, if Epson Smart Panel version 1.0.xA is installed from thescanner software CD, and is used by members of the Administrator or Power Users Group,the program works OK. If a member of the more restricted groups (Users, Backup Operators,
Replicator, Guest) logs on to a computer where an Administrator or Power User has installed
Epson Smart Panel version 1.0.xA, the user will receive an error when Windows 2000 opens.
A dialog box with an “OK” button pops up displaying the following error message:“There is no Registry data for EPSON SMART PANEL!'
If you click 'OK' the dialog box will not go away, even if you click it repeatedly. The computerwill be unusable in this state and eventually it locks up. A hard reset or power off is required atthis point. During installation Epson Smart Panel loads a taskbar shortcut in the System Traythat cannot be disabled. Epson Smart Panel monitors the status of the “Start” button(s) on thescanner at startup; this causes the initial error when Windows 2000 opens.
If a member of the “Restricted User” group attempts to install the Epson Smart Panel software,one of two things may happen. The user may get an error message and not be able to install
Epson Smart Panel, or if the installation completes, all users, including Administrators and
Power Users will get the same 'Registry Data Error' as described above.
Reason:Specifications for Epson Smart Panel require the program be installed and used by membersof the Administrator or Power Users groups only. Epson Smart Panel does not support use bymembers of more Restricted groups. If a member of the more Restricted groups successfullyinstalls Epson Smart Panel, it will need to be manually removed by an Administrator logged inunder “Safe Mode.” Using the “Search” utility in Windows 2000, delete all files for “Epson
Smart Panel for Scanners.” A System Administrator will then need to add the 'restricted user”to the Power Users Group, and then that user can correctly Install and use Epson Smart Panelversion 1.0x.Page 1 of 2

Workaround:As a temporary solution, select another Windows default printer (i.e. one that’s compatible with Copy)and then launch Copy. In Copy, change the printer back to the one that you want to use. Click the greenand Copy button to scan and print.
Follow these steps to configure Copy for the workaround.2
1) First, verify that you have installed the latest version of Copy (currently 2.00A). Launch Copy andlook for a green screen. This is version 2.00A and it should look like this:If you don’t see this on your screen then visit our web site at www.epson.com and download the Copyupdate.
2) Once you have installed the update, test your printer in Copy. If you get an error then go to thenext step.
3) Click the Start button and then click Settings. Select Printers. You can also use Control Panel toselect Printers (Printers and Faxes for Windows XP). In Printers, use the Add Printer Wizard toadd a printer. For Windows 98 and up, you can try the HP LaserJet 4. For Windows 2000 and
XP, the Stylus Photo 750 ESC/P2 works fine. For Windows 95, you’ll need to use an older modelsuch as the HP LaserJet 3 series. Keep in mind that other models can be used. If one modeldoesn’t work then use another one.
4) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer. Once completed verify that it is the defaultprinter.
5) Launch Copy. If the new default printer is compatible, the program will open normally.
6) Click the Device Settings button. This will bring up the Device Settings user interface. In the
Output Device field (the default printer will be listed here), click on the arrow. This will bring upthe Output Device Chooser window. The screen should look like this.3
7) Change the printer name to the one you want to use and then click OK. Click on the Greenbutton to start scanning.

7. Click OK to start uninstalling the files. You’ll see a Setup Status progress screen whilethe files are being removed.
8. When completed, the Maintenance Complete screen appears next. Click Finish.
9. If you have Smart Panel 1.01A or 1.02A installed on your computer system then you willneed to rerun the SETUP.EXE to complete the installation and copy the updated Copy
Utility files to your hard drive. Follow steps 1 through 5 to complete this process, andthen go to step 10 to continue with the installation.
10. If you have Smart Panel 1.03A or 2.00A then the next screen will pop up automatically.Page 3 of 4
11. Click Next. You will see a Setup Status progress screen while the files are being copiedto your hard drive.
12. When all files have been copied, the InstallShield Wizard Complete screen appears.
Click Finish.
13. Launch Smart Panel and open Copy Utility. If you see the following Startup screen,then you have successfully installed the update.
14. The last thing you should do before copying is to turn on the Auto Document
Enhancement.
Note: After installing the Copy Utility 2.00A patch you may find that the Copy Utility producescopies with a Light gray/blue/pink background. This is because in the Copy Utility 2.00A the
Automatic Document Enhancement feature is off by default. To turn it on, click on the Copyapplet to open the Copy Utility. Select Epson TWAIN 5 at the following window and click “OK”.
Click on the “Image Adjust” button - Auto Document Enhancement is off by default; notice

Click on the Auto Document Enhancement button to turn this feature on, notice “On” isselected now and dark gray.
This will resolve the light gray/blue/pink background issue in Copy Utility 2.00A.
Now click on the large green Copy Button, your image will be scanned and printed. The copyof your document should look very close to the original with no background colors added.
Note: The Copy Utility was designed to scan and print a copy of a Letter size (8.5” X
11”) document. If Your document is not a full Letter size piece of paper, then the portionof the scanner’s document mat that is showing will be included as part of your copy.
Some bright white papers can cause a noticeable contrast between the document andthe document mat. As a result the Copy Utility may recognize the exposed documentmat as a having a light blue color. In this case you may still see a light blue backgroundon your printout where the document mat was showing.

iPadOS and iOS 13 (and above) changes the game quite a bit, as users are given so much more freedom to share and store files on an external drive.

External storage works with iPads that support iPadOS, including both USB-C iPad Pro models and many older Lightning iPad models. Most external drives and iPads require that the drive have its own power source to work.

iOS 13 and iPadOS supports these external drive formats

Provide your external drive power!

For most iPads, you need to supply power to your external drive. That means your external drive must be self-powered OR you need to use a powered hub or Apple’s Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter.

This question is not as straight-forward as some would hope for it to be.

There are some drives that allow for directly playing content without copying it into your iPad. One of these is the more popular SanDisk iXpand. You can use apps such as top reel with these drives to play content directly. The regular USB drive from SanDisk did not support this feature. The only one that worked was the iXpand.

It’s only a matter of time Apple will expand the feature to directly view files from the USB drive. We have seen some changes in the latest iOS 13 beta.

Use Quick Look and the Files app!

We are expecting this to change at some point, perhaps after the developers have had more time with the API’s. Fruit loops auto tune. In the meantime, you can actually watch some short videos directly from the Files app with Quick Look.

This is not as “glamorous” as it could be as, but it does get the job done.

In our testing, we used the SanDisk USB-C Dual Drive. This is due to how compact it is, along with the built-in USB-C and USB-A drive.

How to watch your videos using Quick Look & the Files app

1. Insert your drive into the iPad (works for iPhone and iPod too.) Remember to connect your drive to its own power source
2. Open the Files app
3. Look under the list of Locations (for iPhones and iPads, tap Browse first)
4. Navigate to the Drive name and open it
5. Locate the external drive’s video files or folder
6. Tap on the video you want to play
7. Wait for the video to load full-screen. Depending on the length of the video, this could take a few seconds to a few mintues

The video begins playing with the ability to scrub through it as you wish. Something awesome that we noticed during our testing is that interaction with the video is practically seamless and smooth.

Is video playback choppy?

If your content plays back with disruptions or stutters, stop playing and let the video continue to load for a few more minutes. Then, try playing it again.

This is a quick and easy way to watch your favorite movies, but there is a catch.

Originally, we tested this with an MKV video file, which failed to play when using Quick Look.

Then, we went back to the Mac, used Handbrake to convert the file to an MP4 and tried again. Voila! It worked like a charm and we didn’t need to open the video in any other app or upload it to the iPad for it to play.

What about using a third-party app to play videos directly from an external drive?

The problem that we continue to run into when trying to load a video directly from a thumb drive to an app was always the same. The application has not yet been updated to fully support USB drives so you can’t exactly play a video directly.

Instead, you are forced to upload the video from the drive to your iPad, and then import it from the Files app.

We fully expect this to change in the coming weeks and months as apps update for iOS13+ and iPadOS. Once updated, we hope for better integration where videos play directly from the drive using a third-party app.

In the meantime, stick with using Quick Look or upload the video to your iDevice using the Files app and then transfer it to the app of your choice.

Luckily, there are quite a few good video playback apps available on the App Store.

Some of our favorite movie apps for iPadOS and iOS 13

Although the functionality has not yet arrived for apps to handle interacting with the external drives, the following options should be some of the first to do so.

Our favorite is VLC due to how long the app has been around for not just iOS, but macOS and even Windows. But any of these are great video-playback apps.

How to import your videos to your iPad’s Photos or TV app

Many readers have questions surrounding whether you can upload a movie/video from your external drive to the Photos or TV app.

Importing to your iPad’s Photos app

In short, the answer is yes to the Photos application–but again, with a small catch.

When we tried to upload that newly converted MP4 video to Photos, it sat and processed for a while, before throwing out an error message:

Video is too long – Would you like to select a smaller clip from this video to publish?

This error won’t appear for every video that you try to transfer. There is just some type of length or size cut off in iOS that won’t let users transfer just any video files into the Photos app. Unfortunately, we can’t figure out what that exact cut off is and so far, there is no information from Apple about this either!

With shorter video clips like most home movies, you should be just fine transferring those and using the Photos app for playback.

Importing to your iPad’s TV app

Answering the same question for the TV app is a bit more straightforward as the answer is simply – no.

It’s important to keep in mind that while iPadOS is based on iOS, it’s still very new and different from iOS. Apple has implemented a boatload of new features into a brand new operating system so changes may take time.

That includes giving developers enough time to learn about the new API’s and how to implement them into the apps. By the time that iPadOS 14 rolls around, we are sure that many things will have changed, but this is just the beginning for iPad Pros and iPadOS.

While Apple says in its APFS FAQ, “For example, a USB storage device formatted as APFS can be read by a Mac using High Sierra, but not by a Mac using Sierra or earlier,” this seems incorrect.

Two recent changes have made the traditional secure wipe, performed by overwriting a volume multiple times with various types of data patterns, largely a thing of the past. The first change, leading to less reliance on the various secure wipe options, has been the proliferation of SSDs, both as original equipment provided by Apple and by resellers, such as OWC, which bring higher performance storage systems to the Mac.

The second change that directly affects the Mac community, at least in the way free space can be securely erased, is the release of the APFS file system, and how it makes use of shared space between multiple volumes.

In this guide, we’re going to look at erasing volumes, partitions, and containers. We’ll be looking at drives formatted with APFS as well as those formatted with the traditional HFS+ file system. Erase Disk Mac Apfs

We’ll be using the Disk Utility app included with macOS High Sierra and later.

Erasing a Volume: The Basics
Let’s start off with erasing a volume to casually remove any stored data on the selected volume. In this case, we just want to free up the space for a new use, and aren’t worried about anyone being able to recover any of our old data.

Launch Disk Utility, located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

Select View, Show All Devices, or click the View button in the Disk Utility toolbar, and select Show All Devices from the popup menu.

In macOS High Sierra and later, volumes can be carved out of the drive using partitions, or if the drive is formatted with APFS, they can be part of a container. By setting the sidebar to Show All Devices, we can readily see what a volume is associated with. This can affect the way we might choose to erase a volume.

(Make sure the volume you wish to erase is selected, then use the Erase button in the toolbar to begin the erase process.)

In the sidebar, select the volume you wish to erase. The volume is the lowest item in a drive’s hierarchical view. You should see “Physical Drive, Volume” for HFS+ formatted drives, or “Physical Drive, Container, Volume” for APFS formatted drives.

With the volume you wish to erase selected, click on the Erase button in the Disk Utility toolbar, or select Erase from the Edit menu.

The Erase sheet will drop down, presenting the options to change the volume’s name and format, and whether to use any of the Security Options. In this example, we’re just performing a simple erase, so leave everything as is, except for changing the name, if needed, and then click the Erase button.

The erase sheet will change to display a progress bar. When the erase has finished, click the Done button.

Erasing a Hard Drive Volume with Security Options
If you wish to erase a hard drive’s volume and ensure the old information it contained can’t be easily recovered, you can use the Security Options offered when choosing the erase function.

But before you make use of the Security Options, make sure the volume being erased is part of a hard drive and not a fusion drive or an SSD. The security options can shorten the life of SSDs by causing excessive writes to the SSD to occur. In the case of SSDs, for all but the most advanced security needs, you don’t need to use any of the multiple write security options to prevent old information from being recoverable.

(The Erase Security Options feature lets you pick the number of write passes that are made on the selected volume.)

If the volume you wish to erase is part of a hard drive, follow the steps outlined in Erasing a Volume: The Basics, above, until the erase sheet is shown. At this point, click the Security Options button.

The Security Options sheet will be displayed, showing a slider you can use to select one of four methods to erase the selected drive. The Fastest method is the same as the standard erase, and performs no special function to ensure any level of security. Picking this option will result in the volume being erased, but data can be recovered with basic data recovery apps.

Moving the slider one click towards the right will produce the first secure erase, which writes a pass of random data followed by a pass of all zeros across the selected volume. This two-pass write method will keep most individuals with prying eyes using conventional data recovery techniques from being able to access your old information.

The next security option produces a DOE-compliant three-pass secure erase. It uses two passes of random data followed by a third pass using a predefined data pattern. Using this method should secure your old data against most individuals, businesses, and governments not willing to spend excess money or time to uncover your data.

The last and most secure option is a seven-pass erasure that meets DOD 5220-22M standards for a secure wipe of magnetic media.

As you advance the slider to more secure options, you also substantially increase the time it takes to perform the erase. Make sure you really need this level of security before proceeding.

Make your selection and click the OK button, then click the OK button to begin the actual erase.

Securely Erasing SSDs and APFS Volumes
Unless you need to meet a specific business or government requirement, SSDs don’t need to use the secure erase options listed above. By their physical nature, SSDs are inherently secure after a basic erase process. The reason for this has to do with the internal architecture, logical to physical cell mapping, and wear leveling. Once the logical to physical map is removed, which occurs during a standard erase, accessing the internal data would just produce a hodge-podge of data that would be nearly impossible to decipher. If you’re really worried about old information on your SSD being recoverable, and you don’t think the inherent security offered by how an SSD works is enough, you can use this next method to produce an enhanced secure erase.

(Erasing a volume by changing the format to include encryption, followed up by a second standard erase, will create a nicely sanitized volume with little chance of data recovery.)

Erase Hard Drive Mac Apfs

A better and much faster method to produce a sanitized SSD volume is to encrypt the data on the drive, and then erase it, removing the stored encryption key along with everything else. Since encrypting the volume will make use of 128-bit encryption and use a 256-bit encryption key, it’s estimated it would take one billion years using brute force to break the encryption. Of course, it’s also possible that the first brute force attempt could break the encryption, but it isn’t very likely.

If you’re using an APFS volume or an HFS+ volume, you can use the optional encryption format, available when you erase a drive. Simply follow the steps in Erase a Volume: The Basics, above, and when the Erase sheet appears, change the format drop-down menu to APFS (Encrypted), or Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted).

You can also encrypt a volume by right-clicking on the volume on the Desktop or in a Finder window and selecting Encrypt “Volume Name” from the popup menu.

Erasing APFS Containers
APFS volumes share the space within a container. This space sharing has a number of advantages, letting your volumes grow and shrink automatically as needed. But it could also have a security disadvantage. The shared space area of a container could hold old file data, even though the volume that originally contained the information was deleted.

If the container uses APFS encryption or the APFS formatted drive is an SSD, this should not be a concern. In the case of an SSD, the logical to physical map detailing the location of any old file was removed when the volume was deleted. And if the volume was using encryption, the encryption key was lost when the volume was removed.

Even so, some of you will want to be doubly, or even triply, sure, and erase the container when a volume is also deleted.

Note: This process is only valid when a container houses multiple volumes and the physical drive contains multiple containers. If you have a container with only a single volume there’s no need to remove the container.

(Use the minus (-) button to remove a container.)

To erase a container, select the container from the Disk Utility sidebar.

With the container selected, click the Partition button in the toolbar.

A sheet will drop down, asking if you wish to partition or add a volume. Click the Partition button.

A pie chart will appear, displaying any container or partitions on the physical drive. Make sure the container you wish to remove is selected in the pie chart.

Warning: The next steps will erase data from the selected item.

Click the minus (-) button to have all volumes housed within the container, as well as the container itself, removed. The pie chart will be updated to show the outcome. If this is what you intended, click the Apply button; otherwise, click the Revert button to leave the drive untouched.

Wiping a Volume, Container, or Drive: Troubleshooting
One of the more common problems you may encounter is the failure of an erase or a secure erase process to finish. In most cases, the problem occurs when the targeted volume or container fails to unmount. This can occur because one or more files is in active use. Close all open apps, including Disk Utility, then relaunch Disk Utility and try again.

If you still have an unmount failure, you can try manually unmounting the volume by selecting the volume in the Disk Utility sidebar, and then select Unmount from the Edit menu.

Another common problem is the inability to delete a container. This problem can arise when a container houses multiple volumes. Normally, deleting a container should force all volumes within the container to be removed, and then the container to be deleted. If a volume should fail to be removed, the container delete process will quit with an error. Try deleting each volume within the container by right-clicking the volume in the sidebar and selecting Remove Volume from the popup menu. Repeat for each volume within the container.

You can also run into an issue if the container you wish to delete is the first container on a drive. APFS drives require at least one container. Instead, perform an erase on the physical drive (Warning: All data on the drive will be lost).

How to Format a Hard Drive for Mac

Note: If you already used your external hard drive on a PC, be sure to back up any files on it. Formatting your drive will wipe out all the data in it.

1. Connect an external hard drive to your Mac. Some external hard drives need to be plugged into an outlet to work.
2. Go to Spotlight Search, type in Disk Utility, and click the first option. This will open the Disk Utility app, where you will find all the internal and external drives that are connected to your Mac.
3. Then click View in the top-left corner of the window and select Show All Devices.
4. Click the external hard drive you want to format. You can find this on the left-hand side of the screen under External Hard Drives. For the best result, select the disk (the highest option in the external tree).
5. On the top menu, click Erase. This will open a small pop-up window with a warning that erasing the drive will delete all data stored on it and that it can’t be undone.
6. Choose a name, format, and scheme for your drive. You can choose whatever name you want, and you should choose GUID Partition Map for the Scheme in most cases. However, you can choose between the following formats:
   • Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the best option for most Mac users since it is compatible with all Macs.
   • APFS (Apple File System) is only for newer Macs running macOS 10.13 or later.
   • exFAT is compatible with both PC and Mac.
   • MS-DOS (FAT) is also compatible with Mac and PC, but you can only transfer files smaller than 4GB.
7. When you’re done with providing the setup details, click Erase. This will immediately wipe the entire drive.

If you get an error message that states, “Erase process has failed. Click done tocontinue,” don’t freak out about it. This is an issue caused by Time Machine running on your externaldrive.

You will need to turn off Time Machine. You can do this by opening System Preferences and unchecking the boxnext to “Back Up Automatically”.Then click Options beside “ShowTime Machine in menu bar.” This will open another window. Click Cancel and it will turn off the Time Machine.

After you turn off the Time Machine, redo steps 4 to 6.

How to Partition anExternal Hard Drive on Mac

If you have formattedyour drive, you can then partition the drive, which will splitthe drive into two formats. This is perfect for anyone who uses Macs and PCsand wants to transfer files between the different operating systems with anexternal drive. Here’s how to do that:

1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive that you want to partition. It is best to click View > Show All Devices so you can selectthe disk rather than a container.
2. In the top menu, select Partition.
3. Then click the plus sign at the bottom of the pie chart. Every time you click this plus sign, a new partition will becreated.
4. Choose a name, format and size for each partition. You can also change the size of each of the partitions bydragging the white dots at the edge of the circle.
5. Finally click Apply.
